Wheelchair Accessible Buses (WAB)

New era. Buses are now design to accomodate the movements of passengers-in-wheelchair (PIWs).

The first batch of WAB double decker buses [ Volvo B9TL Olympians ] came into service on 27June2006. I can remember it clearly because I set off to Pasir Ris early in the morning to catch this bus before I went to school. These new buses made their debut on service 21, serving between Pasir and St Michael's Estate. Haha, I was almost late for school then.

Service 21, the first WAB service in SG

My favourite, SBS7483U. Seen and touched its chassis before it got itself fitted with a body:

First batch of the new Scania single decker WABs came into service on 1November2007

1) Demonstrator bus SBS8033D (1 unit)

2) The production batch (900 units)

Compare the difference!

Managed to take a picture of myself in the driver cabin of a typical K230UB when it was doing bus captain familiarisation before 1stNovember2007.

Nah, don't laugh. :P

1) SBS8031J Day shot (at Loyang)

2) SBS8031J Evening shot (opp Downtown East)

Love the performance of this bus, compared to the other new models. A recommended bus, commonly found on service 17 (Pasir - Bedok)

First bus to use the new SMB prefix rego (i.e. SMB1H)

1) SMB1H - 1st day on the roads, July08:

New buses look nice and new. BUT...lesser seats and more standing area, zero step entrance and so you've ot to climb the steps when you are looking for a seat. It is rather unstable, especially when you are standing on the higher part of the bus above the engine, and the bus makes a turn...you sway left or right.

The engine is design this way so that the front cabin of the bus allows the elderly passenger to board effortlessly, and to enable the PIW to row up and down the bus without a step as hindrance.

BUT you can't design an engine on top of the bus, unless it is operated by cables.

Well, that's for the day.

Cya!

Even if I can afford it, I won't buy a car. I'd rather travel in buses and trains. You get to see pretty ladies and how people behave.
